S&P 500 DCA calculator

Backtest a recurring S&P 500 buy against the real price index.

The S&P 500 tracks 500 of the largest US-listed companies and is the most widely used benchmark for the US stock market as a whole.

This asset is the price index — it excludes dividends, so it understates the real total return a fund tracking the S&P 500 would have delivered. For dividends reinvested, see the S&P 500 (Total Return) calculator instead.

Why DCA into S&P 500?

The S&P 500's volatility is far lower than crypto's, but it has still had real multi-month drawdowns of 20–50% (2000–02, 2008–09, 2020, 2022) — a recurring buy schedule through those periods bought more shares while prices were down, rather than only at the schedule's starting price.

Frequently asked questions

What is dollar-cost averaging into the S&P 500?
Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means investing a fixed amount into the S&P 500 on a regular schedule — weekly, biweekly, monthly — regardless of the price that day, rather than trying to time a single entry point. Some buys land at a local high, some at a local low, and the average cost per unit smooths out over the whole period.
Does this include dividends?
No — this is the price index only. Run the S&P 500 (Total Return) calculator for the dividends-reinvested version of the same index.
Does this include exchange fees?
By default no — it's a 0% baseline so you can see the raw price effect first. Use the Exchange fee dropdown to add a percentage (a few common presets, or your own) and/or a flat fee per buy under Advanced options, and the DCA total updates to include them.
